John Flerlage Discusses Rule of Law & Rights

On January 11, 1944, at the beginning of his fourth term, Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave his State of the Union address. After the sacrifices of the Second World War and the Great Depression, the President sought to enshrine in American law the four freedoms; freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. In his speech he defined a second Bill of Rights. I support, in addition to our explicit constitutional rights; the right to affordable health care, the right to education, the right to housing, the right to a living wage, the right of every businessman to trade in an atmosphere of freedom, and the right to a dignified retirement. Comprehensive health care reform must be enacted at the federal level.

John is running because he believes that we have an obligation to leave a more peaceful world, a more just world and a more livable world for future generations. He believes we need to support policies that help families and workers.

President Obama’s principles for health care reform are choice, reduced cost and affordable health care for all. The people of this country want a better health care system that includes these principles. But that is not enough. In order to achieve reform, the new system must evolve from the old. Mandating universal coverage through a public plan will require a complex and costly transition. Conversely, a new system that is built on the President's principles and evolves from the present one will be simpler and more affordable and thus be welcomed by the American people.

We must provide more opportunities for early childhood education and we must improve our public schools. We must reform the No Child Left Behind Act, provide flexibility for charter schools, and reward our quality teachers through better pay and opportunities. We must increase access to college and make it more affordable.

Every American who is willing to work should have access to adequate housing. We should never have homeless children and families on the streets of America.

Recently, the property values of all Americans have become threatened by a system of valuation, loans, ratings, and investment vehicles that have undermined the primary investment of Americans. It is the federal government's basic responsibility to provide regulation and oversight to this system. I commit to doing everything in my power as your representative to ensure that this system is never again exploited.

I believe that the United States still has work to do in the areas of equal pay, equal education, equal access to health care, and equal treatment in the justice system. I believe in equal rights for all adult citizens regardless of race, sex, national origin, age, or sexual orientation.

I support the recent Supreme Court decision clarifying the right to bear arms. I strongly oppose the recent attacks on American civil liberties such as suspension of Habeas Corpus, torture, domestic electronic surveillance of U. S. citizens without a warrant, and inappropriate use of eminent domain.

Woman's Right to Choose

We must work to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. That means supporting proven programs and methods that help us to achieve this goal. I fully support the decisions of the Supreme Court in Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey. The decision to end a pregnancy should take place between a woman and her doctor within the limits of these legal decisions. Abortion must remain safe, legal and accessible.
